Developing a method for occupational risk assessment and indentification of harmful substances emitted in processes of processing epoxide resins

Project summary:
The task consisted in presenting information on the use of epoxide resins, their chemical structure and the main mechanisms of polymerization with the use of hardeners of various types. The kinds of active solvents added to modify the physicochemical properties of the produced resin were also discussed, especially active solvents that modify the viscosity of resin before polymerization. Then, a method was developed for determining volatile substances emitted from the most common Epidian 5 and four hardeners: P Z-1, PAC, IDA and TFF. It was shown that most harmful substances in epoxy systems are characterized by very low vapour pressure, so they are a great threat in case of direct contact with the skin. Substances emitted from Epidian 57 and the ET and Saduramid hardeners were also determined. Substances emitted from the most common Epidians: E 5 and E 57 and from hardeners Z-1, PAC, IDA, TFF, ET and Saduramid were defined. Occupational risk assessment methods for working with epoxy systems were developed. They considered individual identified volatile substances emitted form specific resins and hardeners, and additives. The developed recommendations regarding safety in dealing with epoxy resins include a characteristic of the recommended protective measures, determining the emitted substances and organizational recommendations . They also include a list of volatile substances emitted during resin processing.
